Iowa in 1957, Mark joined the audit staff of Arthur Andersen &
Co in Kansas City. He subsequently accepted a position with Panhandle
Eastern Pipe Line Company as a Policy and Procedures Analyst.
In 1961, he was assigned to a newly-formed Panhandle affiliate, National
Helium Corporation, and where he served as Controller and also had responsibility
for the Purchasing, Warehousing and Personnel functions. In 1967,
he was assigned as a Project Manager in the newly-formed Panhandle Corporate
Planning Department and was transferred to Houston.
After serving as Assistant to Panhandle’s President/CEO, he was appointed as Vice-President and General Manager of Paragon Data Systems (a 100% owned Panhandle affiliate) where he directed a 36-member group in designing, developing, marketing , installing and servicing computer software and high-performance remote terminals to provide hospitals with advanced remote data-base systems run on Panhandle’s Univac 1110 computers during off-peak hours. The company provided service to a number of major hospitals across the U.S. With the formation of Valero Energy Corporation, Mark was recruited to join the new company to become the Vice-President of Corporate Planning. This resulted in his moving to San Antonio in 1979.
