It was an article in the PC Alamode that brought Jennie Adams to the Resource Center in Central Park Mall when it opened nearly two years ago. Something John Gaddis said in the article…something about looking for more volunteers now that we had a public presence in the mall. But the key words were: “no experience necessary.” And so she came, and has been a regular Friday 10:00-2:00 presence ever since.

Don't let her fool you: she comes with a lot of experience! When she and husband Jim lived in Yakima, Washington, Jennie was a printer for ten years with the Yakima Herald-Republic. The operation used specialized, dedicated computers back then and Jennie considers herself fortunate to have participated in the field testing of upgrades of those unique systems.

She next found herself up to her metaphoric elbows in an IBM 5110 and then an IBM system 34, used in her husband's commercial / industrial construction firm. They saw the value of networking even back then, and Jennie found herself reluctantly learning all of the extremely expensive state-of-the-art construction trades applications: accounts payable and receivable, payroll, job costing, inventory control, other database management and all the other clerical stuff. Now, nearly 20 years later, Jennie registers amazement at both the ease and the relative low cost of Quickbooks, compared with what was available to them back in the late 70s and early 80s. She's an accomplished (but reluctant? I doubt it!) Quicken user as well.

A career opportunity for Jim brought the Adams family to San Antonio about 1986. Their first PC was purchased around 1988 and Jim joined Alamo PC then, mainly for the Bulletin Board. Jim was always into computer stuff more than she was, says Jennie. “I never even used to read the magazine back then.” She does now.

Jim and Jennie now have his and hers computers: his a Pentium running Windows 98; hers a 486. She was perfectly happy with Windows 3.1. But you've probably guessed what came next: she's now a reluctant Windows 95 user and hopes this is the last upgrade Jim makes on her computer for a long time.

Reluctant or not, she's a learner! As we talked, she pointed to a Resource Center library book she was just returning: a step-by-step series of lessons designed for Windows 95 newbies. Jennie recommends it highly. And she should know: she's the one primarily responsible for setting up the efficient lending library system now available to Alamo PC members. Next time you pop in to the Resource Center, check it out — literally! If it's a Friday, Jennie will help you with your selections, not at all reluctantly.
