Michael wasn't humming “Up, up and away in my beautiful balloon” the evening he found himself on the catwalk of the Alamo Heights High School auditorium, helping volunteer Don Wright set up for the general meeting at which the newest version of Corel Draw 8 was to be presented. Since heights are not really his forte, Mike was trying desperately to avoid going DOWN with the Corel Corporation's beautiful signature balloons, as Don verbally guided Mike's balloon placement from the auditorium rafters. He got the job done without once looking down, and the experience is one that he will carry with him for quite some time, long after he leaves Alamo PC volunteer service in April to return to his native Virginia.

Michael, married and the father of two sons (who, if their homework is finished early enough, accompany their dad to the general meetings and help distribute both drinks and product information — as the particular occasion calls for!), is completing 20 years of active duty in the USAF. He first came to San Antonio for basic training (Lackland AFB); his final tour of duty brought him back.

Mike joined Alamo PC about three years ago, and became a volunteer about 18 months later. He'd arrived at the general monthly meeting earlier than usual, saw that Don Wright could use at least another pair of hands, and pitched right in. He's been at it ever since, helping with both setup and the teardown of the equipment and anything else needed for a successful meeting.

“Joining Alamo PC has helped me a lot,” says Mike. “I've expanded my knowledge of computers by way of the SIGs, the monthly general meetings, and the Help numbers listed in the PC Alamode.” He notes that, as the technology requirements of his job advanced — including hardware and software troubleshooting and repair, networking, virus detection and cleanup — there were always fellow members willing to lend an ear and offer encouragement. “You can burn a lot of midnight oil reading user manual, looking for solutions to the particular ‘problem of the day,’” states Mike, but “talking with Alamo PC members who have already walked down that road before helps a lot. I'm grateful to all of them.” We're grateful to you, too, Mike! God speed and much good fortune in your and your family's new life. We hope that you land that civilian job you're eyeing and that the home computer you built from scratch continues to serve you well.

WANTED: Dedicated general meeting volunteer willing to handle any task necessary to ensure success of meeting. Prefer red-suspender wearer with outgoing personality. Fear of heights not an obstacle to successful candidate.
