February 2001 Rose Lynn Saenger by Ralph Cherry Alamo PC Organization: HOME > About Us > Awards >Volunteers Of The Month |
Rose Lynn grew up and was educated here in San Antonio (IWC, Trinity, OLLU), then went on to become an educator herself. She has taught some but spent about 20 years of her 32-year career at SAISD as a truant officer, now called a visiting teacher. Rose Lynn first became acquainted with computers then, but only as mainframes, with a workstation at her desk for record keeping.
Somewhere early in those years she met and married Karl. If you chance to talk to her, ask Rose Lynn about the English class that led to her discovery of the love of her life. They have since retired and spent some time traveling around the US and Hawaii. Then they bought an 1896 house and spent 3 years remodeling it. When it was almost finished they got an offer they couldn’t refuse, so they sold it and built a new house.
Now picture the life these two live: near a big city, but far enough out that they can walk out the front door in the morning and see a beautiful 1-acre lake in front, with Blue Herrings, Kingfish, and other birds lazily searching for food. You would have almost 100 acres surrounding you that are your own, with no neighbors too close by, you can hear the birds singing and the crickets cricketing and no freeway noise assaulting your ears. Frankly, I’m a little jealous. As I write this I can look out my kitchen window and see 3 houses within 50 yards of my window, I hear airplanes overhead heading for the airport, and if I listen closely I can hear the traffic on NW Military. The non-city life certainly has its appeal.
What kind of activities is Rose Lynn involved in? Of course there is SeniorComp, but she also teaches computer classes at the Senior Center in New Braunfels. She is a Certified Agri-Food Master, judges canning at the Guadalupe county fair, and helps run a booth at the Wurstfest for the German American Society.
Rose Lynn knew some about computers as a visiting teacher, but bought her first personal computer in early 1998. Then she came in contact with SeniorComp, then got tickets to ITEC, and there she joined AlamoPC. She now has a machine with (hold on to your hat) 384 Mb of Ram. That’s 3 sticks of 128 Mb Ram! She also has a printer, a scanner, and a 30 Gig hard drive.
Her principal uses of the computer now include e-mail, writing, limited
Internet, bookkeeping, genealogy, and especially writing. You will
see a lot of her software reviews in the
